mdzs speculating

I wanted to keep track of my theories for mo dao zu shi so I figured I'd throw them all here.

General information: This is going to contain spoilers up to the most recent translated chapter & episode of the donghua, so please don't proceed if you're not also up to date. I'll also be updating this with changes in theories if they happen, and those updates will happen towards the top of the post so everything will be in descending date order as edits are made to this post.

Also, please note that I don't actually want to know if any of this is right or wrong. This is purely so I have a place to organise my thoughts.

Update #1
Date: 28 September 2018
Chapter: 70
Episode: s1e12 (eng) 13 (chn)

1.

What if Jin GuangYao wanted Mo XuanYu to summon Wei WuXian? It seems that GuangYao is the reason XuanYu knew about the spell to summon WuXian in the first place… if XuanYu genuinely liked GuangYao, he would probably be easy enough for GuangYao to manipulate, especially combined with the situation of him being kicked out of the Lanling Jin Sect and being stuck with the Mo family who he hated.

At the beginning of the story when WuXian is summoned, he thinks about how weird it is that he was the one summoned when he isn't known as some vengeful spirit - I mean, this could also just be him underestimating his notoriety, but what if it was because GuangYao put a specific idea into XuanYu's head to make him want to summon WuXian specifically?

I'm still not sure why GuangYao would want that… maybe because of the Tiger Seal? I don't think he'd want WuXian summoned/revealed just for the sake of publicly defeating him when he's already Chief Cultivator. My other theory behind this is because he knows how stupid Lan WangJi would get over WuXian if he came back? Either because he's observant enough to pick up on the fact that WangJi has a thing for WuXian or because Lan XiChen has made mention of it.

With WangJi out of the picture helping WuXian once he's been revealed for who he really is in XuanYu's body, and XiChen holding him in too high regard to directly oppose him without a significant amount of conflict, it means the two most powerful members of the Gusu Lan Sect are mostly out of his way if he's going to launch a Wen-style takeover of the cultivation world (but also… why would he bring WuXian back when WuXian was instrumental in the Sunshot Campaign……)

If GuangYao was making a bid for power though…… Gusu Lan Sect's strength is diminished with the combination of WangJi siding with WuXian and XiChen being sentimental (I hope XiChen proves me wrong here), Yunmeng Jiang Sect doesn't seem particularly strong any more but I don't actually know anything about them beyond Jiang Cheng being the leader? Qinghe Nie Sect is pretty weak with Nie Huaisang being the leader. I don't think the Lanling Jin Sect would oppose their leader, especially if he manipulated them into thinking that they're doing the right thing. There's the fact that he got away with building the towers everywhere despite the resistance he faced, while the Wen supervision officers were not accepted at all - but then again, the other sects were already unhappy with the way the Qishan Wen Sect were doing things anyway.

I'm really curious about why GuangYao cut Nie MingJue up into all of those different pieces? Did he just not want WuXian or anyone else turning MingJue into a fierce corpse? Did he try turning MingJue into a fierce corpse but it didn't end up working? Perhaps this was before Xue Yang came along and figured out how to control them with the nails in their heads.

This kind of also loops around to me wondering why GuangYao had Wen Ning locked away as well. He couldn't control Wen Ning because WuXian was the one who made him into a fierce corpse, but didn't want to lose him either in case he could figure out how to control him later, maybe? Which could also be one of the reasons that GuangYao protected Xue Yang, because Xue Yang is better at this cultivation style?

I might think of more to add when I reread the chapters, but I'll leave it here for now.
