Collecting the threadfic I wrote for michi's birthday!
It's unusual for Kojiro to wake up in an empty bed, when he tends to rise early and Kaoru prefers to sleep late. These days, it only ever happens when they need to travel for work. Kaoru has spent the past week in Kyoto and every morning, Kojiro has woken up feeling lonely.
Kojiro stretches, reaching to his side and running his hand over the sheets. When he turns to look at Kaoru's pillow, the early morning light glints off the hold ring around his finger. He smiles to himself, getting out of bed and going about his morning routine.
Kaoru comes home today. Kojiro's taken the day off, just because he wants to be home to greet his husband, but it means that he doesn't have his usual work to keep him busy enough to pass the time.
He starts off with his morning jog, and then weights in their home gym.
He's drinking his protein smoothie when he hears a knock at the door. His heart skips a beat, even though he knows that it's too early for Kaoru to be home, and that he definitely wouldn't be knocking on his own door.
It's Miya, standing there with his hands in his pockets.
"We're going out," Miya declares, and then wrinkles his nose. "After you've showered, maybe."
"Are we, now?" Kojiro raises an eyebrow, but Miya's already walking through the door and making himself comfortable on the couch.
"I'll wait here," he says, pulling his Switch out.
Kojiro showers, because there's little point in arguing with Miya when he's already decided something.
"Alright," he says after, "where, exactly, are we going?"
Miya looks at him like it's a ridiculous question. "Out. Come on."
Kojiro sighs, letting Miya lead the way.
Maybe Miya needs some advice, and he's building up to it. Communicating with teenagers is difficult sometimes, and Miya can be abrasive sometimes, and withdrawn at others.
Kind of how Kaoru used to be, Kojiro thinks, and smiles to himself. Maybe that's why he and Miya get along.
He thinks back to when Kaoru would get like this: demanding without actually saying what he needed, and he knows exactly what to do.
"This way," he says, patting Miya on the back and leading the way down a familiar street.
"What." Miya blinks. "Wait, get back here!"
Whenever Kaoru needed to talk about something but needed time to build up to it, they'd get ice cream and sit by the sea to eat it in comfortable silence until he was ready to fill it. It's still one of Kojiro's favourite places to sit, even if the ice cream shops have changed.
"Joe," Miya protests, as Kojiro stops at one of the ice cream shops.
"Don't worry." Kojiro holds out the cone. "I got you a small one. It won't blow your meal plan out."
"But—" Miya accepts the cone, frowning as he follows Kojiro down to the seaside. "Wait. Don't go that way."
"Why not?" Kojiro asks, and then he suddenly knows exactly why.
He looks over at his favourite spot by the sea. The bench where he'd sit with Kaoru when they were younger. The same place he asked Kaoru to marry him.
His heart skips a beat, and he starts walking closer.
Kaoru is standing there, his travel bag by his feet, his arms full with a floral bouquet. Kojiro recognises the logo on the wrapping from Shadow's shop. He looks flustered to be caught, and glares at Miya.
"You were meant to buy me some more time."
"I tried," Miya complains.
"You're home early," Kojiro says, blinking slowly at Kaoru.
"I wanted to surprise you." Kaoru shifts his weight, clearly embarrassed. "You're always buying me flowers and making me desserts and I—just wanted to do that for you. I asked Miya to help keep you distracted."
"He did his best," Kojiro says, slowly walking over to Kaoru and taking the bouquet out of his arms. "This is beautiful, Kaoru. I ended up coming here because I was thinking about you. I missed you."
"It's only been a week," Kaoru mutters but softer, adds, "I missed you too."
"Let me take you home," Kojiro says, shifting the bouquet into one arm. He takes one of Kaoru's hands into his, thumb stroking over the back of it. "I'll find a nice vase for these and I'll make you some food and—"
"Can I go home now?" Miya asks loudly.
Kojiro laughs. He forgot Miya was there for a moment. His entire world had narrowed to just Kaoru.
"Yes, Miya." Kaoru says. "Thank you."
"Thank you," Kojiro echoes, before he turns back to Kaoru and lets everything else fade into the background.
He squeezes Kaoru's hand gently. "Let's go home, yeah?"
Kaoru smiles at him, leaning into his side to press their shoulders together. It's more affection than Kojiro usually gets out of him in public. Today is a good day.
"Yeah. Let's go home."
