plain text version of the purple light excerpt I posted on twitter.
Kojiro is sixteen when he sees Kaoru with Adam. He's late meeting up with them, having stopped by a nearby vending machine near their usual spot by the run down drive-in.
The vending machine has the same flavour of iced tea that their school vending machine had run out of before Kaoru could get one during lunch, so Kojiro buys it for him. He feels weird showing up with a drink for Kaoru and not Adam, so he buys another just for good measure. He doesn't really want to skate with his arms full so he balances the three bottles on his board as he walks over to the drive-in. He stops in his tracks when he sees Adam and Kaoru against the railing, kissing each other.
His heart clenches, and he tightens his grip on his board. Everything makes sense now. The way Kaoru looks at Adam. The breathless excitement in his voice whenever he talks about their plans to sneak out that night to skate.
The look in his eyes when that senior called him gay. The way it hurt him. Because they were right.
You're not gay, you're just Kaoru, Kojiro remembers saying. He knows what he meant, but he can't help but wonder if he hurt Kaoru too.
Kaoru makes a soft sound that draws Kojiro's attention before he realises what it is: a soft hum, because kissing Adam feels good.
Kojiro backs away slowly and quietly, so they don't hear him. He walks all the way home even though he's still carrying his board. He doesn't feel like skating right now.
When he sneaks back into his room, he realises he's still carrying the three bottles from the vending machine. He places them on the edge of his desk and sits on his bed, head in his hands and he feels his heart threatening to beat right out of his chest.
He doesn't text Kaoru and Adam to tell them he's not coming, but they don't text him to check either. They're probably distracted anyway and that makes an unpleasant feeling twist in Kojiro's stomach. Kaoru has other friends. Sometimes he hangs out with them instead of Kojiro but it's never been like this beforeāit's never made him feel bad.
As he lies in bed and tries to get to sleep that night, he wonders if kissing Kaoru feels good too.
